Update

Hello there. As of February 14, 2008, I’ve deleted the majority of content on this site - well, technically, I’ve just made the posts private. Which is what they should have been in the first place.

It’s always humbling to realize you’ve made an enormous mistake, but I know that, at the very least, my public relationship struggles in the last seven months made others feel less alone. They certainly taught me quite a lesson … just not the lesson I thought I would learn.

Good luck to you all.

Subject: More thoughts from the ether…

Hello…

Whatever happened with you and Jakob, please know that your online experiments were interesting, insightful, and inspiring. While you two were hashing out your thoughts online, I was in a relationship wishing that we could achieve that kind of open communication. For better or worse, you had the opportunity to explore both of your thoughts honestly and probably accelerate toward an inevitable conclusion. Your character and approach to both the relationship and experiments has been admirable and that example is appreciated.

Dear Readers,

Thank you for participating in this experiment with us.

This will be my last blog on this site.

Thank you for all of your words of wisdom, both kind and, well, not so much.   It was a fascinating journey.

Love,

Julia

Discussing Privacy

The following is from CSI, following a conversation in which they discuss people who post to Twitter:

Guy #1) Some people just don’t value privacy.
Guy #2) They don’t expect privacy, they value openness.
Guy #1) Whatever.

People constantly ask Jakob and me why we don’t “value our privacy”; the truth is, I’ve never thought of it like that. I *DO* value my privacy - quite a bit. There are all sorts of things I’d never contemplate posting.

But I also value openness, and that’s what this experiment is about - delving into the inner-workings of a real relationship, with all its flaws. Perhaps you wouldn’t want to discuss this sort of thing online (or maybe anywhere!). I get that - I wouldn’t expect most people to be comfortable with this. That having been said, I’ve been a dating columnist for over five years now; it’s a natural - and fascinating - next step to analyze a realtionship as it evolves.

I couldn’t imagine a better learning experience.
